The World Ballet Company brings The Nutcracker to the Majestic Theatre in Dallas on Wednesday, December 17th. This year's rendition of the all-time classic promises to include elements that are going to make it a memorable show from the moment they pull back the curtains. There are certain things about The Nutcracker that make it an epic experience just on its own. This is the one you’ll remember!
That's what the World Ballet Company has been saying about their own Nutcracker experience. You could take the approach that, sure, they have to say this! Yet, the Nutcracker landscape is very competitive year over year, with plenty of companies offering their version of the classic. In spite of this competition, the World Ballet Company is able to sell out theaters throughout the holiday season, helping people experience this unique holiday show. We're going to try to explore why they're able to put on this show and still get people to come out and see it.
There are a lot of things that we could point to, but some of those come with spoilers, so we're going to try to navigate the situation the best way we can. The costumes and set design are over the top. They are actually using "active characters" that are part of the story. With many of these performances, we get a huge nutcracker doll, for example, that's part of the stage design, but not really active in the story. That goes against the traditional tale! Definitely one of the things that's unique is this willingness to use active characters and dancers to tell a more compelling story.
At a performance like this, you don't want to be too close to the stage, so ideally, find a seat in the middle of the theater. That's going to offer the best view of the stage design and all of the other elements that make up The Nutcracker. The Majestic is an amazing venue if you're looking for that type of spot because it's not massive, even if you're toward the back of the theater, you could still see the stage just fine.
