About Ledisi

Ledisi Anibade Young hails from New Orleans, born to a musically-incliuned family. With singers and musicians in the family tree, beautiful notes were no stranger in the household. At the age of eight, she performed with the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra, marking the start of her passion to make her voice heard.

From playing Dorothy in an Antioch Community Theater production of The Wiz (earning a Shellie Award nomination) to scoring a record deal by the 2000s, Ledisi was and remains unstoppable. With performances described as a "religious experience" by critics over at Billboard, plus earning Grammy nominations here and there, it became clear that people can't get enough of her power. 

With a voice described as a "vocal powerhoiuse", she's been hailed by critics as one of the most distinct vocalists of the 21st century in rhythm and bkues. Fellow world-famous musician John Legend remarked, "As a contemporary vocalist, there’s almost no one I can think of in the world that sings as skillfully as she does. In terms of her range, dexterity, clarity, versatility, she can do anything she wants."

Taking The Crown

Indeed, she sure can do anything that she wants. This time, she's taking The Crown. As she was selected to perform at the Super Bowl in New Orleans and felt some pressure to record more as the opportunity comes, her producer Rex encouraged her to create something naturally. An album that wasn't exactly planned the way it came out, The Crown became something she embraced. 

"[Rex is] the one that told me, don’t quit, keep going. He and my mother, because I was done with the music industry," Ledisi shared, as cited from Lakes Media. It was too hard to me. I didn’t look the right way or fit in. … We’ve been working together so long. He says, ‘Why are you afraid to call it The Crown? Go ahead and receive that position, that status, like, be that, you are that, it’s OK.""

"The goal is to leave with that crown. Choosing what is heavy, is joyful, is life. A crown is your calling."
