Espresso Nutcracker is a fun and family-friendly holiday show and an absolute must-see! It’s an hour-long holiday dance spectacle which is created and performed by the Dallas Black Dance Academy. The story follows a young girl named Clara on Christmas Eve as she dreams of toy soldiers, the Mouse King, dancing snowflakes, waltzing flowers, and the beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy.

The dazzling show will be performed at the stunning Majestic Theatre in downtown Dallas. This beautiful venue will be transformed into a winter wonderland. About Dallas Black Dance Academy

If you didn’t already know, the Dallas Black Dance Academy is the school connected to the Dallas Black Dance Theatre. Formed in 1976, The Dallas Black Dance Academy was created the same year as its parent company, Dallas Black Dance Theatre (DBDT) by founder Ann Williams. From beginners right through to advanced dancers, the academy teaches students of all ages and skill levels. Classes are offered in ballet, modern, jazz, tap, and African dance. Each year, the Dallas Black Dance Academy’s students perform in public showcases and community events, including the popular Espresso Nutcracker. 

Espresso Nutcracker was first introduced in 2013 and it’s been a staple ever since! The show has become a Dallas holiday tradition which is staged each December at the Majestic Theatre. The unique show has received glowing reviews over the years.

Instead of the long, formal ballet, Espresso Nutcracker offers a fresh twist on the Christmas classic. "We intermix Tchaikovsky's classical version along with Duke Ellington's jazz version of the Nutcracker," Dallas Black Dance Academy Director Katricia Eaglin said. "I think it's the only Nutcracker of color in the area."

"I think it's important for the audience to see a representation of students of color doing ballet," Eaglin said. "Because there's a long history of students of color not being provided an opportunity to train in classical ballet."
